Problem:  Wanting to film the Olympic swimmers from underneath, an inventor/movie director needed a special cable to be used in his new lipstick-sized, underwater robotic video camera. The design called for a coaxial cable similar in function to a RG-58/U coax that was flexible, waterproof, with a long flex life and that could withstand a continuous pull force of 50 pounds under these conditions.

Solution:  To ensure the tension and mechanical requirements without compromising the electricals, Bay Associates' engineers designed a coax cable with a high strand count conductor for flexibility, wrapped the shield with an extra layer of PTFE tape to prevent noise in the video signal that otherwise would be created through friction, and added Kevlar® fibers for strength. DuPont's Hytrel® was selected for the jacketing material because of its water resistance. Hytrel's® hard surface also helped to keep the cable from sticking inside the cable channels used in the camera's operating system. Bay Associates even color matched the cable to the lane markers used in the Olympic Pool.

Marine Application Solutions
Problem:  For a research project tracking the migratory patterns of whales, a marine company needed a highly flexible and watertight two-conductor hydrophone cable. The application called for the cable to be dragged by a boat through the water where it would transmit the sounds whales make as they began their migration. Because of the environmental stresses demanded by this application, the cable also needed to have a pull strength of three to five-thousand pounds with a small overall diameter. The customer needed just 300 feet, however, of this custom cable and required a four-week turn-around time from cable conception and design to delivery.

Solution: To meet the pull strength requirements without compromising flexibility, a nylon wrap was applied to each conductor prior to insulating them with silicone rubber. Pull strength was increased further with an overall Teflon® binder and second nylon braid. With signal integrity a top consideration, RFI and EMI shielding were attained through the application of an overall braid. Finally, to combat the environmental stresses of the application, a polyurethane jacket was selected for its water-resistant, flexible and highly durable properties. The completed cable of just 300 feet was delivered to the customer's door within four weeks from their inquiry.
